Mistral, Gabriela

Born: April 7, 1889. Vicuna
Died January 10, 1957, Hempstead, New York. Chilean female poet. Her real name was Lucila Godoy Alcayaga. Born the daughter of a teacher, she herself devoted herself to education for many years. Her early works are permeated with the anguish of love thwarted by the suicide of her fiancé and despair over the barrenness of motherhood, but in her later poems these are sublimated and transformed into a pantheistic, infinite love. Her representative collections of poems include Desolación (1922), Ternura (24), and Tala (38). She also had a long career as a diplomat overseas, including at the League of Nations. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1945.

A local wind that blows through the Rhône River valley in France toward the Mediterranean Sea. It is a strong northerly wind that blows down the mountain slopes, a type of bora, but as it blows through a long, narrow valley, the air currents converge and become even stronger. It blows from winter to spring, and in the lower Rhône basin, it can reach wind speeds of 30 to 40 m/s and is very cold, causing great damage to crops.
