A Mexican Indian group. They live mainly in the state of Oaxaca, but are also found in the states of Guerrero and Puebla. The Mixteco-speaking population aged 5 and over was 306,000 (1977). They developed a highly sophisticated civilization, with hereditary hierarchical regional groups centered around kinship groups holding power, and priests in charge of the calendar and ceremonies. They had advanced techniques in codices (old manuscripts), ritual pottery, and goldwork, and are thought to have had a major influence on the culture of Nahuatl-speaking Indians. After Aztec rule, the Spanish conquest destroyed the indigenous political and religious integrity. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
