Spain's greatest novelist and playwright of the 19th century. After studying law at the University of Madrid, he became a journalist, but made his literary debut with his first novel, The Golden Fountain (1868). He continued to write for over 50 years, studying Balzac and Dickens as his mentors, and produced a vast body of work. The core of this body of work are two series. One of these is Episodes Nacionales (1873-1912), a series of 46 novels that depict the history of 19th century Spain from the Battle of Trafalgar to the Restoration of the Monarchy. The first book, Trafalgar, and the seventh, Gerona, are particularly outstanding.

19世紀スペイン最大の小説家，劇作家。マドリード大学で法律を学んだのちジャーナリストになったが，処女作《黄金の泉》(1868)で文壇にデビュー。以後，バルザックやディケンズを師とし，50年以上にわたって書き続け膨大な作品を残した。この作品群の中核をなすのは次の二つのシリーズである。その一つは46冊の小説からなる《国史挿話Episodios Nacionales》(1873‐1912)で，これはトラファルガー海戦から王政復古にいたる19世紀スペインの歴史を描いたものであるが，なかでも1冊目の《トラファルガル》と7冊目の《ヘローナ》が傑出している。
