A journalist living in France who deals with issues related to the former communist bloc. Born in Poland, he automatically became a citizen of the former Soviet Union when Poland was divided by Germany and the Soviet Union in 1939, and graduated from Rostov University. He regained Polish citizenship in 1946, and moved to Paris in 1950, where he contributed to the magazine Nouvelle Observateur and the newspaper Le Monde, and wrote prolifically on analysis of trends in the communist bloc. He has written many books, including Khrushchev and Western Europe, Mao Zedong's China, and The Castro Way.
