An insect of the order Odonata, family Coleoptera. Body length is about 50 mm. Both males and females have metallic green bodies, with males having transparent, orange-yellow or orange-red, or reddish brown wings, while females usually have transparent wings. Mature males have white powder on their bodies. Both species emerge early in spring and disappear in summer except in mountainous areas. They are distributed in Hokkaido, Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Oki. In Japan, they are divided into three subspecies: Nishikawatombo (illustration), Higashikawatombo (illustration), and Okawatombo. However, Nishikawatombo and Okawatombo are often found in western Japan, and two of these three subspecies are often found mixed in central Honshu.
