A perennial herb of the Asteraceae family that grows in the mountain forests of Honshu, Shikoku, and Kyushu. The stem is 20-50 cm tall, has many basal leaves, and usually grows in a clump. The lower leaves are long-stalked and winged, and the upper leaves are stalkless, with a few coarse sawtooth edges and fine hairs on both sides. It is also called "Sixth chrysanthemum" because it flowers from May to June. The flowers are heads of pale bluish-purple ray florets and yellow tubular flowers, and are borne singly at the ends of the branches. They are 3.5-4 cm in diameter.
