1869‐1939 American surgeon. Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he studied medicine at Yale and Harvard, and then studied surgery under Theodor Emil Kocher (1841-1917) at the University of Bern in Switzerland. After returning to the United States, he worked to pioneer brain surgery based on precise localization and stereotaxy at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. In 1912, he opened a neurosurgery clinic at Harvard, where he developed methods for surgically treating various brain diseases, completely changing the face of neurosurgery.
