Born: March 9, 1891, South Luzon
Died November 6, 1959, Manila. Philippine politician. Graduated from the University of the Philippines in 1915, and received his doctorate from Yale University in 1920. Elected to the Philippine Senate in 1925, he served as Secretary of the Interior, a Supreme Court justice in 1936, and served as President of the Philippines during World War II under Japanese occupation (1943-45). Charged with treason after the war, he was released under a general amnesty in 1948. He ran for president in 1949 as a National Party candidate, but lost to E. Quirino of the Liberal Party. He became a senator in 1951 and worked hard to support President R. Magsaysay, and after he took office, he was the chief plenipotentiary of the Japan reparations negotiations team in 1954, and led an economic mission in 1955, negotiating an agreement to improve economic relations with the United States, and concluded the Laurel-Langley Agreement. He retired in 1957.
