Mishima
[1][一] (Named after the location of Mishima Taisha Shrine) A place name in eastern Shizuoka Prefecture. Located at the base of the Izu Peninsula. In the past, it was the location of the provincial capital and provincial temple of Izu Province. During the Edo period, it flourished as a post town between Hakone and Numazu on the Tokaido Highway. It is the gateway to the hot spring resorts of northern Izu. It was incorporated as a city in 1941 ( Showa 16 ). さん‐とう ‥タウ【三島】

[一] =さんしんざん(三神山)(一)〔神仙伝〕[二] 新潟県の中央部の郡。信濃川の左岸で、出雲崎、寺泊等の町がある。日本海に面する。中世、古志郡が信濃川を境として東西に分割されて成立したもので、西古志郡とも称し、また、山東郡とも書かれた。古代の三島(みしま)郡は、現在の刈羽郡を含む地方で、今の三島(さんとう)郡の南方にあたる。
