A northern Austrian state (land). It has an area of 11,979 km2 and a population of 1,384,000 (1995). It is located in the Danube basin, and consists of the Bohemian forest to the north of the river, the loess areas of the Inn, Krems, and Enns rivers to the south, and the pre-Alpine mountain range of the Salzkammergut. The agricultural region of Austria spreads southward through the Danube, and the majority of the inhabitants make a living from agriculture, but forests also cover 40% of the state.
