In the 1970s, experimental theatre companies emerged as part of counter-cultural activities, and representative examples of these were the group based at the Nimrod Theatre in Sydney, and the Australian Theatre Company based at the Plum Factory (now closed), a converted baby carriage factory, and the La MaMa Theatre in Melbourne (playwrights such as J.
