Mishima [village] - Mishima
A village in Kagoshima County, southern Kagoshima Prefecture. Population 513 (1995). It is made up of the Kuchinoshima Islands (Takeshima, Iwo Jima, and Kuroshima) located 40-50km south of the Satsuma Peninsula. All of the islands are volcanic, and Iwo Jima in particular is constantly emitting smoke. Since the Middle Ages, this island has been the site of many exiles, including Shunkan, who was sent to Iwo Jima (Kikaigashima), and there are many historical sites, including Shunkando. Formerly known as Kami-mishima, it was part of Oshima County's Jitsuto Village from the mid-Meiji Period together with Shimo-Shichito Islands, which are now part of Toshima Village.
