Showa Research Society

Japanese:
Showa Research Society

This was a research institute for intellectuals that acted as a brain trust for Konoe Fumimaro. It originated from the Goto Ryunosuke Office, which was planned by Konoe's friend Goto Ryunosuke and started in October 1933 (Showa 8) with Royama Masamichi at the core. In December of the same year, it was named the Showa Research Group, and in November 1936, it announced the "Purpose of Establishing the Showa Research Group," clarifying that it was a research institute for establishing national policy by scholars, journalists, bureaucrats, businessmen, and others. It brought together many intellectuals in specialized research groups on world policy, politics, economics, culture, and China issues, and presented a variety of tentative plans and measures one after another. Among them, the "East Asian Cooperative Body Theory" proposed by Royama Masamichi, Miki Kiyoshi, Ozaki Hidemi, and others in response to the "Declaration of a New Order in East Asia" of the first Konoe Cabinet in November 1938, caused a particular stir. In 1940, he presented a plan for the "Konoe New System" which aimed to create a new national organization and promoted a movement to achieve this, but in the end, the Imperial Rule Assistance Association was established and Goto joined the association, leading to the organization's dissolution in November of the same year.
