Mishima

An island in the Sea of ​​Japan, 45 km northwest of Hamasaki Port in Hagi City, Yamaguchi Prefecture. Formerly known as Mishima Village. Area 7.73 km2. A plateau-like island made of basalt, with an Air Self-Defense Force radar base on Mount Ikurage (175 m). In the Wamyōshō, it appears as Mishima-go, Otsu County. The G-Combo Burial Mounds are a nationally designated historic site, a group of burial mounds from the 7th to 10th centuries. In the Middle Ages, it prospered through trade with the continent, and in the early modern period, it was a key location for coastal defense, forming one island and one county. The Hagi Domain established a lookout post and built artillery batteries. It was also a place of exile for the domain. Records from 1739 (Genbun 4) state that there were 346 houses, 1,927 people, and 31 ships. A warm island washed by the warm Tsushima Current, the island is often used for rice paddies, and produces a lot of rice, tobacco, radishes, and winter cabbage. The specialty is Mishima Wagyu beef. Fishing is mainly done with gill nets, longlines, and line fishing, and the catches of tilefish, yellowtail, squid, turban shells, and sea urchins are large. The Mishima cattle production area and the Mishima turtle habitat are nationally designated natural monuments. There is a regular ferry service from Hamasaki Port. Population 1,041 (2009).

山口県萩(はぎ)市の浜崎港から北西へ45キロメートルの日本海に浮かぶ島。旧見島村。面積7.73平方キロメートル。玄武岩からなる台地状の島で、イクラゲ山(175メートル)には航空自衛隊のレーダー基地がある。『和名抄(わみょうしょう)』には大津郡三島郷とみえる。ジーコンボ古墳群は国指定史跡で、7~10世紀の群集古墳。中世は大陸貿易で栄え、近世は海防上の要地として一島一郡をなした。萩藩は遠見番所を置き、砲台が築かれた。また、藩の流刑地でもあった。1739年(元文4)の記録には家数346軒、人数1927人、船数31艘(そう)とある。対馬(つしま)暖流に洗われる暖かい島で、島内はよく水田化され、水稲、タバコ、ダイコン、冬キャベツの産出が多い。特産は見島和牛。漁業は刺網、延縄(はえなわ)、一本釣りがおもで、アマダイ、ブリ、イカ、サザエ、ウニの漁獲が多い。見島ウシ産地、見島のカメ生息地は国指定天然記念物。浜崎港からの定期便がある。人口1041(2009)。
