British art historian and literary scholar. Born in Brittany, France. Graduated from the École Normale Supérieure in Paris in 1928, he spent time in Italy immersed in the study of the Renaissance, and later moved to the UK, where he taught at Cambridge and Oxford universities. His doctoral thesis, The Genealogy of Pagan Gods (1940), is considered his signature work. His interpretation that the gods of ancient Greece and Rome remained in Christian medieval culture in a changed form and were reborn with the Renaissance overturned the conventional view that viewed antiquity, the Middle Ages, and the Renaissance as being discontinuous, and brought about new developments in art history and literary research.

英国の美術史家，文学者。フランスのブルターニュ地方に生まれる。1928年パリの高等師範学校を卒業，イタリアに滞在してルネサンス研究に没頭，後に英国に渡り，ケンブリッジ大学，オックスフォード大学で教える。博士論文《異教の神々の系譜》（邦題《神々は死なず》）（1940年）が代表作とされる。古代ギリシア・ローマの神々がキリスト教中世の文化のなかに姿を変えて残り，ルネサンスとともに再生するという彼の解釈は，古代，中世，ルネサンスを断絶の相でとらえる従来の見方を覆すもので，美術史と文学研究に新展開をもたらした。
