African marigold
Also known as Dimorphotheca. An annual plant of the Asteraceae family native to South Africa. It is sown in autumn and is suitable for use in spring flower beds and as cut flowers. It grows to about 30cm tall. The flower heads, 3-4cm in diameter, open during the day and close at dark. The ray florets are orange and have black centers. There are tetraploid varieties with large flowers and tall plants, as well as hybrids with white, yellow, and salmon-colored flowers. Note that a similar plant of another genus (Osteospermum) is sometimes sold under the name Dimorphotheca.

ディモルフォセカとも。南アフリカ原産のキク科の一年草。秋まきで,春の花壇用,切花に向く。草たけ約30cm。径3〜4cmの頭花を日中開き,暗くなると閉じる。舌状花はオレンジ色,心は黒い。花も草たけも大きい4倍体品種や,白,黄,鮭(さけ)肉色の花をつける交雑種もある。なお〈ディモルフォセカ〉の名前で,よく似た別属(オステオスペルマム)の植物が流通していることがある。
