Michigan [State] - Michigan
A state in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Abbreviated as Mich., MI. Divided into an upper peninsula and a lower peninsula by Lake Michigan. The state is generally a low hilly plateau, and is subject to significant glacial erosion. The automobile industry, centered in Detroit, is world famous and is the state's most important industry. It is home to the headquarters of General Motors and Ford Motor. Other industries include various machinery, chemicals, and food processing. The main agricultural industry is dairy farming, producing cheese and butter, and potatoes, wheat, sugar beets, apples, and soybeans. The upper peninsula facing Lake Superior is undeveloped forest, but is rich in minerals such as iron ore and limestone. First settled in 1668, joined the Union in 1837. State capital: Lansing. Largest city: Detroit. 250,487 km2 . 9,909,877 people (2014).
