Mississippi [river] - Mississippi
A large river that runs through the central United States from north to south. It is the fourth largest river in the world, with a total length of 5,969 km from the source of its longest tributary, the Missouri River. The main stream begins in northern Minnesota and flows south to the Gulf of Mexico. Its drainage area is about 3.25 million km2 , accounting for about 40% of the entire United States. In addition to the Missouri River, other major tributaries include the Arkansas River, Red River, Illinois River, and Ohio River. It is used on a large scale for water transportation, power generation, irrigation, and water supply. The French, who first settled in the basin, recognized the importance of the river and named the basin Louisiana in 1682. In 1718, they founded New Orleans at the mouth of the river. The entire basin became U.S. territory with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The heyday of river traffic was around the time of the Civil War, but even today it is possible to travel up the river by steamship to Minneapolis, making it a major inland artery. It has been the setting for many literary works, including Mark Twain's "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer" and "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn."
