Ben Barka

1920‐65
Moroccan politician. Born in Rabat, he became a mathematics and physics teacher, but became politically active from his student days, and participated in the founding of the Istiqlal Party in 1944. After independence, he held the important positions of Chairman of the Consultative Assembly and Secretary General of the Party as a representative of the left wing of the party (labour union faction), but in 1959 he left the party due to conflicts with the right wing of the party (landlords and merchants faction) and founded the National Union of Popular Forces (UNFP). He fled the country due to conflicts with King Hassan, but was kidnapped and assassinated by Moroccan authorities in October 1965 in Paris, where he had taken refuge.

モロッコの政治家。ラバトに生まれ，数学と物理の教師になったが，学生時代から政治活動に挺身し，1944年のイスティクラール党結成に参加した。党内左派(労働組合系)の代表として独立後は諮問議会議長，党書記長の要職に就いたが，59年に党内右派(地主･商人系)と対立して離党し，〈人民勢力全国同盟(UNFP)〉を組織した。ハサン国王と対立して国外に逃れたが，65年10月亡命先のパリでモロッコの官憲により誘拐され，暗殺された。
