One of the schools of tea ceremony. Its ancestor was Yabuuchi Soha, and its first head was Yabuuchi Jōchi (1536-1627), a disciple of Takeno Jōō, leading to the current 14th head, Chikkei Jōchi (1967-). Because it was under the patronage of Nishi Hongan-ji Temple throughout the Edo period, it has maintained the ancient style of tea ceremony that existed before Rikyu. While the San-Senke schools in Kamigyo, Kyoto, are called the upper school, the Yabuuchi school in Shimogyo is called the lower school. It is represented by Ennan, a tea ceremony room in the residence that was designed to suit Oribe's taste. It is said that the first head, Kenchū Jōchi, received instruction on the daisu from his senior disciple Rikyu after Jōō's death. His wife was Oribe's younger sister. The second Shin'o Shochi was the son of Kenchu and called Gesshinken. He became acquainted with the Honorable Ryonyo Shonin of Hongan-ji Temple and was bestowed part of the temple's land, and moved to his current residence. The Tsubame-an, which was located within Jurakudai, was relocated here. The third Ken'o Shochi was the son of Shin'o and called Unkyakutei. The fourth Kenkei Shochi was the son of Ken'o and called Shounsai. The fifth Chikushin Shochi was a Confucian scholar from the Ogaki domain, and was his son-in-law, called Fujusai. He is known as the founder of the revival. He wrote works such as "Genryu Chawa" and advocated a return to Rikyu. The 6th generation Chikuin Shochi was the nephew of Kitao Shunrin. He was also known as Hirosai and Unkyakushi. The 7th generation Chikuo Shochi was originally a samurai of Yamato Koriyama Domain. He was known as Keiinsai. He performed the 200th anniversary memorials for Kenchu, Rikyu, and Oribe. The 8th generation Chikui Shochi was the son of Sanno Joyo, known as Shinsai, and was the tea ceremony instructor for Kazunomiya. The 9th generation Chikuro Shochi was the son of Chinyusai Shoan, known as Hourinsai. The 10th head priest, Chikusui Shochi, was originally an adopted son of the Fukuda clan, the official physician of the Daishoji domain, and was known as Kyūkyūsai. He founded the Jōen Society. The 11th head priest, Chikusui Shochi, was the eldest son of Taketsuyu, and was known as Tougetsusai. The 12th head priest, Chikufu Shochi, was the eldest son of Taketsuyu, and was known as Iisai. The 13th head priest, Takenaka, was the eldest son of Takefu, and was known as Seikyūsai.
