One of the five Great Lakes in North America. Long and narrow from north to south, it is about 520 km long, 100 km wide, and has an area of 58,016 km2 . The lake surface is 176 m above sea level. Its maximum depth is 281 m. It is surrounded by the states of Michigan, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Indiana. It is the third largest lake among the five Great Lakes. It is connected to Lake Huron in the east through the Mackinac Channel at its northeastern end.
