Kamifuda Post Town

In the Edo period, the five Futa post towns, including Kamiishiwara, Shimoishiwara, Kamifuda, Shimofuda, and Kuniryou on the Koshū road, and the Kojima sub-village of Kamifuda and Kajuku, were collectively called the Futa five post towns. In the Musashi Rural Register from the early Edo period, all of these are listed as towns, but in the 1702 (Genroku 15) gocho they are listed as villages, and in the 1834 (Tenpo 5) gocho, Kamiishiwara is listed as a post town and the others as villages. …

…10世紀に成立した《和名類聚抄》に見える爾布田郷の地ともいわれている。江戸時代，甲州道中の上石原，下石原，上布田，下布田，国領の各宿と，上布田宿加宿の小島分村を合わせて布田五宿といった。江戸時代前期の《武蔵田園簿》ではこれらがすべて町として記されているが，1702年(元禄15)の郷帳では村となっており，1834年(天保5)の郷帳では上石原が宿とされ他は村になっている。…
