Letter of intent - Uchiwatashijo

Japanese: 打渡状 - うちわたしじょう

One of the samurai documents from the Northern and Southern Courts and Muromachi periods. Dispositions related to land, such as territorial disputes, donations, and fulfillment, approved by the Muromachi Shogunate were ordered by the Shogunate through the Shugo and Shugodai, and then to the envoys sent to the land site with the Shigyojo and Jungyōjo documents, and the land site (ground land) was actually handed over to the landowner by the envoy. At the time of this handover, the envoy issued a Uchiwatari-jo document, also called a Watashi-jo document, to the landowner or his/her representative. The person who received the Uchiwatari-jo document submitted a request document to the envoy, and the procedure for handing over was completed. In many cases, the Uchiwatari-jo and Jungyō-jo documents, including the Shogunate's disposition documents, were kept by the landowners as a series of documents.

南北朝・室町時代の武家文書の一。室町幕府により裁許された所領相論や寄進・充行(あておこない)など土地にかかわる処分は，幕府から守護・守護代らを通じ，さらに現地へ派遣される使者へと施行状(しぎょうじょう)・遵行状(じゅんぎょうじょう)をもって命じられ，使者により土地の権利者に実際に現地（下地）が引き渡された。この打渡しの時，使者から土地の権利者もしくはその代理人に発給されたのが打渡状で，渡状(わたしじょう)ともいう。打渡状を与えられた者は使者に請取状を提出，これにより遵行の手続きが完了した。なお打渡状・遵行状は幕府の処分状を含め，一連の文書として権利者の手元に保存される例が多い。
