During the Heian period, this was a ceremony in which the emperor viewed horses presented from various pastures in various provinces. It was held on August 15, but was later changed to the 16th due to the national mourning of Emperor Suzaku. The pastures where the horses were kept were determined by imperial decree, and originally the days on which the horses were brought were set, such as Kai on the 7th, Chichibu in Musashi on the 13th, Shinano on the 16th, Hosaka in Kai on the 17th, Ono in Musashi on the 20th, Mochizuki in Shinano on the 23rd, Takeno and Tatsuno on the 25th, and Kozuke on the 28th. Each province kept between 50 and 80 horses. At the end of the Kamakura period, horse-drawing in various provinces disappeared, leaving only Shinano and Mochizuki pastures.
