Uchiwadaiko - Uchiwadaiko

A drum made of skin stretched over a round frame, struck by a handle. It is so named because of its shape, which resembles a fan. It is depicted in Utagawa Hiroshige's woodblock prints "Ikegami Pilgrimage" and "Manners of Eshiki Ceremonies," and has been used since the mid-Edo period as a Buddhist implement when chanting the Nichiren sect's mantra (Namu Myoho Renge Kyo) at ceremonies such as Oeshiki, which commemorate Nichiren. It is an essential item for members of the Daimoku and Mando sects, but the double-sided version is believed to have been made in the late Edo period or early Meiji period.

丸い枠に皮を張り、柄(え)を持ってたたく太鼓。形が団扇に似ているところから、その名がある。歌川広重(ひろしげ)の版画「池上詣(いけがみもうで)」「会式(えしき)風俗」などにも描かれており、江戸中期から日蓮(にちれん)を追慕する御会式(おえしき)などに、日蓮宗の題目（南無妙法蓮華経(なむみょうほうれんげきょう)）を唱える際の仏具として用いられてきた。題目講中や万灯(まんどう)講中にとってなくてはならないものであるが、両面張りのものは江戸末期か明治初期にできたと推定される。
