A city in the southeast of Paraná state in southern Brazil. It is located about 70 km east of the state capital, Curitiba, and overlooks Paranagua Bay, a deep inlet of the Atlantic Ocean. It was founded by the Portuguese in 1585. In the second half of the 19th century, as coffee cultivation became popular inland, it developed as a shipping port. Currently, it is one of the country's leading coffee shipping ports, and is also the state's main port as the outer port of Curitiba, shipping leather, paper, mate tea (Paraguayan tea), timber, bananas, and sugar. Industry is also thriving, with factories for lumbering, wood processing, coffee roasting, and mate tea processing. A 17th-century fountain and an 18th-century fortress remain in the city. Railroads and roads connect the city to Curitiba. Population: 107,583 (1991 estimate).
