Hidetatsu Egawa
1801-1855 A samurai and gunner in the late Edo period.
Born May 13, 1812. Second son of Egawa Hidetake. A shogunate official. In 1836, he became the magistrate of Izu Nirayama (Shizuoka prefecture), and, calling himself the 36th Tarozaemon, he worked to reform the civil administration. He learned gunnery from Takashima Shuuhan for coastal defense, and taught Sakuma Shozan, Kido Takayoshi, and others. When Perry arrived on the Japanese navy, he was appointed as a kanjo ginmiyaku (financial inspector) and built a battery off the coast of Shinagawa. He also built a reverberatory furnace in Nirayama and cast cannon barrels. He died January 16, 1859. He was 55 years old. His pen name was Kuen, and his pen name was Tan'an.

享和元年5月13日生まれ。江川英毅(ひでたけ)の次男。幕臣。天保(てんぽう)6年伊豆(いず)韮山(にらやま)(静岡県)代官職をつぎ,36代太郎左衛門を称し,民政の改革につくす。海防のため高島秋帆(しゅうはん)に砲術をまなび,佐久間象山,木戸孝允(たかよし)らに教授。ペリー来航のとき勘定吟味役格となり品川沖に砲台を築造,また韮山に反射炉をつくって砲身を鋳造した。安政2年1月16日死去。55歳。字(あざな)は九淵。号は坦庵。
