This saltwater fish belongs to the order Tetraodontiformes and family Polytminae. It is found in tropical areas of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Its name comes from the fact that its body is laterally compressed and its abdomen expands downward like a fan. The teeth on both jaws are fused to form a beak, with two teeth on the upper jaw and one on the lower jaw. Its body is yellow with black eye-like spots on its abdomen. It can reach a total length of 30 centimeters. This species has intermediate characteristics between the suborder Tetraodontiformes and the suborder Polytminae. It lives in deep waters offshore and is caught by line fishing. Fishermen in Okinawa use it for food, but it has little market value.

硬骨魚綱フグ目ウチワフグ科に属する海水魚。インド洋と太平洋の熱帯域に広く分布する。体は側扁(そくへん)し、腹部が団扇(うちわ)のように下方に拡張しているのが名前の由来。両あごの歯は癒合して嘴(くちばし)状になり、上あごに2枚、下あごに1枚の歯がある。体色は黄色で腹部に黒色の眼状斑(がんじょうはん)がある。全長30センチメートルに達する。本種は、フグ亜目とモンガラカワハギ亜目を結ぶ中間的な特徴を備えている。沖合いの深所に生息し、一本釣りで漁獲される。沖縄の漁師は食用にするが、市場価値はほとんどない。
