...Hermes Trismegistus, known as the founder of alchemy, is a deity formed by the syncretization of Hermes and the Egyptian Thoth. In artworks, apart from Hermai, he was originally depicted as a bearded, clothed man, sometimes as a shepherd with a sheep on his shoulders, but since the 5th century BC, he has often been depicted as a naked, handsome young man wearing a wide-brimmed hat with wings (petasos), holding a staff called a kērykeion (caduceus) in his hand, and wearing winged sandals on his feet. One famous work is the statue of Hermes holding the infant Dionysus (around 340 BC) by Praxiteles, excavated from Olympia. ...
