A city in the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in northeastern Germany. It is located about 200 km north-northwest of Berlin, at the back of the Warnow estuary, 13 km inland from the river mouth. It was incorporated in 1218. It joined the Hanseatic League in the 14th century. The University of Rostock was established in 1419 and became the political and cultural center of the region. From 1952 to 1990, it was the capital of Rostock County (formerly East Germany). It is still the central city along the North Sea coast, and in recent years, the industry, mainly shipbuilding, has developed significantly. Industries such as fishery processing, metals, machinery, and chemicals are also thriving. In the city, the town hall (15th century), St. Nicholas Church (14th century), and St. Marien Church (14th-15th century) have been restored, and historical buildings such as parts of the city wall and gates have survived the war. Population: 201,442 (2010). Source: Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia About Encyclopaedia Britannica Concise Encyclopedia Information |
