Born July 10, 1931. Wingham. Canadian author. Maiden name Laidlaw. Born into a poor farm family in Ontario, her mother was a teacher. She studied English and journalism at the University of Western Ontario for two years. In 1951, she married her first husband, James Munro, and opened a bookstore in Victoria, where she raised three daughters. She later divorced and remarried. She began writing novels in her teens. After her marriage, she published her stories in small literary magazines while working at home and raising her children. In 1968, she published her first collection of short stories, "Dance of the Happy Shades," which won the Governor General's Award, Canada's most prestigious literary award. She later won a second Governor General's Award for "Who Do You Think You Are?" (1978) and a third Governor General's Award for "The Progress of Love" (1986). "The Love of a Good Woman" (1998) won the prestigious Giller Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, both of which are prestigious Canadian literary awards. In 2001, she published a collection of short stories, Hateship, Friendship, Courtship, Loveship, Marriage. One of the stories, "The Bear Came over the Mountain," which deals with Alzheimer's disease, was adapted into a film by director Sarah Polley in 2006 as "Away from Her," which received high praise. In 2004, she won the Giller Prize for the second time for "Runaway." Her other representative works include "The View from Castle Rock" (2006) and "Too Much Happiness" (2009). In 2009, she became the first woman to win the International Booker Prize. Her final collection of stories, "Dear Life" (2012), contains four semi-autobiographical stories. Influenced by 20th century American southern female writers such as Flannery O'Connor and Katherine Anne Porter, she captures the subtleties of human nature with sharp insight and empathy, and expresses them in a precise, colorful style. In 2013, she became the first Canadian to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.

[Died] April 14, 1974, Sarasota American aesthetician. Worked at the Cleveland Museum of Art, editor of the aesthetics magazine "Journal of Aesthetics and Art Criticism." Standing in the trend of experimental aesthetics, he examined various aspects of art from both the perspectives of morphology and psychology. He is the author of "Toward Science in Aesthetics" (1956) and many others.

British soldier and politician. He served in the army of the British East India Company, including the Second Anglo-Mysore War and the Third Maratha War. In 1792, he was involved in land tax assessment in Salem, India, and recommended the Rayyatwali system, which was implemented in Madras from 1812 onwards. He served as Governor of Madras from 1820 to 1824.
