Arimasa Mori

[Died] October 18, 1976. Parisian philosopher and French literature scholar. Grandson of Mori Arinori, the first Minister of Education, he was a Christian from an early age due to his father, a pastor. Graduated from the French Literature Department of the University of Tokyo in 1938, and specialized in Descartes and Pascal. After working as a professor at the First Senior High School, he moved to France in 1950 while working as an assistant professor at the University of Tokyo, and settled in Paris. In 1955, he began teaching at the University of Paris, lecturing on Japanese language and Japanese thought. After completely destroying the empty structures consisting only of existing words (nouns) and explanations (propositions), he named the only thing that is layered and crystallized with a certain touch through direct contact with the world and nature as "experience." He believed that this experience is what concretely defines a person, and strictly distinguished it from "experiences" that are given by chance from the outside and mechanically increase. His books include "Pascal's Method" (1943), "Dostoevsky Notes" (50), "By the Rivers of Babylon" (57), and the Complete Works of Mori Arimasa (14 volumes, 78-81).

哲学者，フランス文学者。初代文部大臣森有礼の孫にあたり，牧師であった父親の影響で幼い頃からのクリスチャン。 1938年東京大学仏文科卒業，デカルト，パスカルを専攻。第一高等学校教授を経て東京大学助教授在籍中の 50年に渡仏，そのままパリに定住して 55年からパリ大学で教鞭をとり，日本語と日本思想を講じた。既成の言葉 (名辞) と説明 (命題) だけから成る空疎な構築物を破壊しつくしたのちに，直接に世界と自然に触れることのなかで，唯一，確実な感触をもって重層し，結晶してくるものを「経験」と名づけた。この経験こそ一人の人間を具体的に定義するとし，偶然的に外側から与えられ，機械的に増大する「体験」とは厳密に区別した。著書に『パスカルの方法』 (1943) ，『ドストエーフスキー覚書』 (50) ，『バビロンの流れのほとりにて』 (57) などがあり，『森有正全集』 (14巻，78～81) がある。
