...Three terraces have developed along the Arakawa River that runs through the basin: high (300-450m above sea level), medium (250-300m), and low (160-270m). The high and medium terraces, which are covered with loam layers, have been dissected to form hills, and are called the Odamaki Hills and Hitsujiyama Hills, respectively, from which the views of the basin are magnificent. Mulberry fields and rice paddies were cultivated on the flat, wide low terraces, and settlements developed, becoming the main stage for industrial activity and social life in the Chichibu region. ...
