1535‐1615 A Chinese monk from the late Ming Dynasty. He was also known as the Master Lotus Pond. Together with Kanzan, Daguan, and Gueki, he is known as one of the Four Great Monks of the Ming Dynasty. He was from Renhe, Hangzhou (Hangzhou City, Zhejiang Province). His surname was Shen, and his style name was Fuhui. He lamented the stagnation of Buddhism as it was flourishing in the era of Yangmingism, and worked to reorganize Zen and Nembutsu as sects. He lived in Yunqi, Hangzhou, and devoted himself to teaching his disciples and writing. One of the results of his work was Zenguan Zejin, a collection of poems on the unity of Zen and purity from the Song Dynasty onwards, which had a great influence on Japanese Buddhism, but he also wrote many other books, collectively known as Yunqi Fayi.
