An annual naturalized plant of the Caryophyllaceae family that grows on roadsides and in cultivated fields. The stem branches at the base, then rises, forming a clump 20-30 cm tall. The leaves are linear, have stipules at the base, and grow opposite each other, but the axils have about 10-20 leaves on short branches that appear to grow in whorls. From June to August, a large cyme blooms at the end of the stem. The flowers are small, about 5 mm in diameter, with white petals that are not incised. There are five styles and five to ten stamens. The fruit is ovate with five lobes at the end. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
