Julian (English spelling) Camille Julien

French historian and ancient historian. He is particularly known for his research on Gaul under the Roman Empire, leading up to the founding of France. Born in Marseille, he went to Paris and enrolled at the École Normale Supérieure, where he obtained a first-class teaching qualification in history (1880). He studied in Rome, then went to Berlin, where he was taught by Mommsen. On returning to France, he was employed at the Faculty of Letters at the University of Bordeaux. In 1905, he taught at the Collège de France in Paris. In 1924, he was elected a member of the Academie Française. His main work, History of Gaul (8 volumes), was published between 1808 and 1821. His other works include Administration of Provinces and Cities in the Roman Empire (1884), History of Bordeaux (1895), Belsingetoris (1901), and From Gaul to France (1922).

フランスの歴史家、古代史家。とくにフランスの建国に至る、ローマ属領下のガリアの研究で名高い。マルセイユ生まれ。パリに出て、エコール・ノルマル・シュペリュールに入学。歴史学の1級教員資格をとる(1880)。ローマに留学。ついでベルリンへ赴き、モムゼンの指導を受ける。フランスに帰国して、ボルドー大学文学部に奉職。1905年パリのコレージュ・ド・フランスの講座を担当する。24年アカデミー・フランセーズの会員に選ばれた。主著『ガリア史』(8巻)は08~21年の間に刊行された。ほかに『ローマ帝国の地方と都市の行政』(1884)、『ボルドー史』(1895)、『ベルサンジェトリス』(1901)、『ガリアからフランスへ』(1922)がある。
