…The difference between this school and the commentary school lies above all in the intensive study of individual problems and in the approach to current problems in legal practice, and in the development of flexible and precise methods of interpretation and argumentation, supported by high scholasticism. This school was established by Bartholus and his student Baldus de Ubaldis (1327-1400), and reached its academic peak, with the preparation of Cinus de Pistoia (c. 1270-1336), who introduced a new direction in Roman law studies that had developed independently in southern France in the first half of the 13th century. They theoretically recognized the ordinances and customs that were actually in effect in Italian cities as law, and considered the common law jus commune, which had supplementary validity to these special laws, to be Roman law (and canon law). …
