An evergreen shrub of the Ardisiaceae family. It is widely distributed in the warm temperate zone of Asia, and in Japan it grows in forests in warm areas west of the southern Kanto region. It is also cultivated for ornamental purposes. The stem is erect, 30-100 cm tall, and sparsely branched. It is completely hairless, and the leaves are alternate, oblong, 7-12 cm long, with an inner glandular body between the sawtooth, and have bright and dark brown spots on the surface. Around July, the corymbs grow at the top and produce a cluster of small white flowers with five petals. The flowers are star-shaped, about 8 mm in diameter, but are fused at the base to form a shallow cup shape. The fruits are spherical, ripen red, and remain from winter to spring, so they are well known as New Year's flower arrangements along with the glossy leaves. Cultivated varieties include Kiminomanryo and Shirominomanryo, which are color variations of the fruit.
