American film director. Born in Pennsylvania. Won the Academy Award for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay for two consecutive years for Letter to Three Wives (1949) and All About Eve (1950). He excelled in comedies and thrillers. Other works include The Barefoot Countess (1954), the suspense film Suddenly Last Summer (1959), a film adaptation of one of T. Williams' Black Plays trilogy, and Cleopatra (1963), starring E. Taylor.

米国の映画監督。ペンシルベニア州生れ。《三人の妻への手紙》（1949年）と《イブの総て》（1950年）で，２年連続アカデミー監督・脚本賞を受賞。喜劇やスリラーを得意とした。ほかに《裸足の伯爵夫人》（1954年），T.ウィリアムズの《黒い戯曲》３部作の１本を映画化したサスペンス《去年の夏　突然に》（1959年），E.テーラー主演の《クレオパトラ》（1963年）などがある。
