Conomurex luhuanus (English spelling)

Japanese: マガキガイ(籬貝) - マガキガイ（英語表記）Conomurex luhuanus

A gastropod shell of the family Polytminae (illustration). The shell is obconical, reaching a height of 5.5 cm and a width of 3.5 cm. It is thick and tough, with seven layers. It looks similar to a cone shell. The shell is covered with a yellowish-brown skin, but removing this it is smooth and has a yellow background with horizontal stripes of blackish-brown spots. This resembles a hedge, hence the name Magakigai. The outer lip of the shell opening thickens in adult shells and is indented below the suture. The inner surface is red, with a black inner lip. The operculum is brown and claw-like, with serrated edges on the outside. When crawling, the operculum uses the operculum as a lever to move with a hopping sound.

ソデボラ科の巻貝（イラスト）。殻は倒円錐形で，高さ5.5cm，幅3.5cmに達する。殻は厚く堅固。巻きは7層。外観はイモガイ類に似ている。殻表は黄褐色の殻皮をかむるが，それを除くと平滑で黄色の地に黒褐色の斑が横縞状にならぶ。これを生垣に見たててマガキガイの名がある。殻口の外唇は成貝では厚くなり，縫合下で湾入する。内面は紅色で，内唇部は黒色になっている。ふたは褐色のつめ状で外側が鋸歯状に刻まれる。はうときには，このふたをてこにして，ごとりごとりと跳ねるように移動する。
