Unlike early modern village maps, these are maps that depict the residential areas of townspeople in early modern cities. Many town layout maps show the street layout and the shape and names of the towns laid out along those streets. A type of town map is a residential layout map that shows the layout of each individual house within a town, with the width and depth dimensions, area, and name of the landowner for each plot. There are also town maps, such as lodging maps, that show the floor plan of each establishment, such as inns. While some were created by townspeople themselves, most were ordered to be created by city rulers such as magistrates out of the need for control.

近世の村絵図に対して，近世都市の町人居住地を描いた絵図。街路形態と街路に沿って配される町の形状および町名が記された町割図が多い。町内の個々の屋敷割まで書き込んだ屋敷割図も町絵図の一種で，一筆ごとの間口・奥行き寸法や坪数，地主名などが書き込まれた。また宿絵図のように，旅籠など一軒ごとの間取りなどをも記した町絵図もある。町人側で作製する場合もあるが，多くは町奉行など都市支配者が支配の必要から作製させた。
