Infant School Association

...The purpose was to prevent the adverse effects on the physical and mental development of young children caused by the miserable lives of working families brought about by the Industrial Revolution. The Infant School Association, founded by S. Wilderspin in 1824, played a major role in popularizing the idea. It received government subsidies from 1940, and in 1876, the Education Act made it a rare institution in the world that accepted children over the age of five for compulsory schooling.
