1922‐90 Italian writer and critic. Born in Milan, he studied political science at the University of Pavia. He participated in the neo-avant-garde literary movement and made his literary debut in 1964 with Tragicomedy. He advocated the fictional nature of literature and political independence, and, aiming to reject established literary styles, he created a unique writing style that makes full use of paradox, rhetoric, and irony, and has written many works. He is considered the greatest writer of the neo-avant-garde. His major works include A New Commentary (1969), One Hundred Tales (1975), and Love (1981).
