There are various definitions, such as escaping from the cycle of rebirth (saṃsāra), escaping from suffering, eternal life, and immortality, but as a whole, it always has something to do with escaping from the cycle of rebirth.

It is well known that they held up materialistic gain (artha) and passion (kama) as the goals of life alongside law (dharma) and liberation (mokṣa). Inscriptions engraved by kings and princes contain detailed records of years, royal genealogies, places, events, and so on, showing that they had a strong interest in the past and present. …
