…He served as president of the University of California from 1823 to 1930, and president of the National Academy of Sciences from 1831 to 1935. Between 1898 and 1922, he participated in seven solar eclipse observation expeditions, and by inventing the plate-moving method, he succeeded in taking photographs showing the continuous transition from absorption line spectrum to emission line during a solar eclipse. He also determined the radial velocity of many stars through spectroscopic observations, and used this information to study spectroscopic binaries, the proper motion of stars, and the spatial motion of the sun. …
