Echegaray - José Echegaray (English spelling)

Spanish playwright. After achieving success as a mathematician, economist, and politician, he devoted himself to playwriting in his 40s, and achieved fame with "Mad or Saint" (1877). He excelled in technically sophisticated and popular works, and reigned over the theater scene at the end of the century. His main works include "The Great Middle" (1881), which depicts a love triangle, and the symbolic play "The Mad God" (1900). He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1904.

スペインの劇作家。数学者、経済学者、政治家として成功を収めたのち、40代から劇作に専念し、『狂か聖か』（1877）で名声を博した。技巧的で大衆性のある作品を得意とし、世紀末の劇壇に君臨した。おもな作品としては三角関係を描いた『大いなるなかだち』（1881）、象徴劇『狂える神』（1900）がある。1904年ノーベル文学賞受賞。
