A former town in Kanzaki County, central Shiga Prefecture. Occupying the Koto Plain on the left bank of the Aichi River, the town cultivates rice and other vegetables. Industries such as textiles, electrical appliances, and chemicals are also thriving. It is one of the birthplaces of the Omi merchants. The Omi Railway Main Line and National Route 8 pass through the town. In February 2005, it merged with Yokaichi City, Egenji Town in Kanzaki County, Aito Town in Aichi County, and Koto Town to become a city, Higashiomi City. Area: 16.28 km2 . Population: 11,659 (2003). 滋賀県中部,神崎(かんざき)郡の旧町。愛知(えち)川左岸の湖東平野を占め,米作のほか,蔬菜などを栽培する。繊維,電化製品,化学製品など工業も盛ん。近江商人発祥地の一つ。近江鉄道本線,国道8号線が通じる。2005年2月八日市市,神崎郡永源寺町,愛知郡愛東町,湖東町と合併し市制,東近江市となる。16.28km2。1万1659人(2003)。
