Numerical control. A computer is built into the control device, numerical data is converted into digital electrical pulse signals, and the number of pulses is used to automatically control the machine tool. Compared to manual control, it does not require special skill, and it can produce products with consistent quality and reliability. It started with metal cutting, and has rapidly spread to applications such as welding, melting, and assembly inspection. There are three basic elements: control information, control device, and controllable machine. The control information stored in the computer's memory device is sent to the control device, which drives and controls the device that performs the actual work through processes such as pulse generation and interpolation. Machine tools include drill presses, planing machines, and milling machines. For complex machining, APT (Automatically Programmed Tool) is used, which creates control information tapes from processing conditions (tools, cutting conditions, shape, dimensions, etc.) using a computer. Group control (group management) systems are also used, in which a single computer directly controls a group of multiple machine tools.

数値制御。コンピュータを制御装置の中に組み込んで，数値データをデジタルな電気パルス信号に変換し，そのパルス数によって工作機械を自動制御すること。人間による手動制御に比べて特別の熟練を要さず，また品質の一定した信頼性の高い製品をつくることができる。金属の切削加工に始まり，溶接，溶断，組み立て検査などに応用されて急速に普及している。基本要素としては，制御情報，制御装置，制御可能な機械の三つがある。コンピュータの記憶装置に収められた制御情報は制御装置に送られ，パルス発生，補間などの過程を経て，実際の作業を行なう装置を駆動・制御する。工作機械にはボール盤，平削り盤，フライス盤などがある。複雑な工作では，コンピュータで加工条件 (工具，切削条件，形状，寸法など) から制御情報テープをつくりだす APT(Automatically Programmed Tool)などを用いる。また1台のコンピュータで複数台の工作機械群を直接集中制御する群制御 (群管理) システムも利用されている。
