This is a disease in which a laceration occurs near the esophagogastric junction (mainly on the stomach side) due to a sudden rise in intraperitoneal pressure caused by violent vomiting, resulting in hematemesis. In 1929, American pathologist GK Mallory and internist S. Weiss first clarified the condition through autopsies of four patients who had died after vomiting large amounts of blood after repeatedly drinking alcohol. The most common trigger for the onset of this condition is repeated vomiting due to alcohol, but it can also occur with violent vomiting due to other causes such as food poisoning and car sickness.
