The making of printing plates. There are manual methods and methods that use machines or photography or electronic technology. The former include hand-set type (letterpress printing), lithography, and engraved intaglio, but modern printing is mostly done by the latter. There has been a remarkable mechanization of the process, with the use of automatic typesetters, phototypesetters, photoengraving, and electronic platemaking. In recent years, there have also been an increasing number of cases where plates are made in the rapidly growing field of DTP.

印刷用の版を製作すること。手工的方法と，機械または写真・電子技術を利用する方法とがあり，前者には手組みの活版（活版印刷），石版，彫刻凹版などがあるが，現代の印刷はほとんど後者による。自動鋳植機，写真植字，写真製版，電子製版の利用などその機械化は著しい。また近年，普及のめざましいDTPでも，製版を製作するケースが増えてきている。
